THe usa enters the war
Since the start of the war, President Woodrow Wilson promised the United States that they would remain neutral and would not get involved in the war. In fact, the United States was so against the war, that Henry Ford spent over $100,000 on a "peace voyage" to try to negotiate with the Europeans to stop fighting. For a while, Wilson maintained his promise and kept the USA out of the conflict. During this time, German U-Boats began attacking allied nations. Tension began between Germany and the USA after the Lusitania, an American passenger ship, was sunk by U-Boats. Despite the tension, the USA still did not get involved in the war, and President Woodrow Wilson was reelected for another term in 1916, again promising citizens to keep the country out of war. But as tension grew, the United States finally entered the war in 1917. In the beginning of the year, the USA only had about 2,000 soldiers recruited, but this number soon skyrocketed. Soldiers were sent over to Europe to fight. Under the slogan, "Food Will Win the War", Americans at home rationed food and produced more to send off to the soldiers. Many women took on the jobs of men who were fighting in the war.
